JOB SUMMARY:

The Associate Counsellor at Nelson House Medicine Lodge provides essential support to the Treatment Counsellors in delivering culturally grounded, client-centered care for individuals participating in NHML treatment programs. This position assists in implementing comprehensive treatment services for Relatives in Recovery living with substance use and concurrent disorders. The Associate Counsellor collaborates with internal staff and external agencies, such as Justice and Child & Family Services, to ensure accurate reporting on attendance and program completion (with client consent). The role requires strong teamwork skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work with at-risk and vulnerable populations.

This position requires human relations skills needed to guide, influence and motivate others to make positive healthy lifestyle changes. They will promote mitho pimatisiwin through role modeling abstinence from drugs and alcohol and demonstrate positive lifestyle choices for a minimum of one (1) year; as well as how to identify, understand, and overcome personal problems associated with substance abuse and other addictive behaviors.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Completion of a one-year relevant certificate or diploma, with addictions training preferred; or any combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, abilities, skills and competencies. JOB SUMMARY:

The Recovery Coach empowers individuals as they prepare to enter the Nelson House Medicine Lodge’s eight (8)-week residential treatment program and provides ongoing aftercare support to ensure continuity of services following program completion.

The Recovery Coach will assist Relatives In Recovery on their journey to recovery by providing guidance, support, and resources tailored to their goals. The Recovery Coach will use a strengths-based approach to help Relatives In Recovery build resilience, develop life skills, and connecting them with their community services. This role focuses on fostering hope, promoting self-advocacy, and supporting long-term wellness in a collaborative, non-judgmental environment.

JOB SUMMARY:

As a vital member of our treatment team, this role will involve conducting comprehensive assessments and delivering treatment services within the eight (8)-week inpatient treatment program.

The successful candidate will possess considerable knowledge of Best Practices and Standards in substance use disorders and concurrent disorders, enhancing treatment outcomes. The Treatment Counsellor will promote person-centered care and incorporate traditional and cultural practices into the healing plans of our Relatives In Recovery.

This role demands expertise in counselling and therapy techniques, group facilitation, assessments, treatment planning, and evaluation. Strong human relations skills are essential to guide, influence, and motivate others in achieving the Lodge’s goals. A deep understanding of Indigenous healing methods is crucial to promote culture as the foundation of healing and recovery.

This position is considered a safety-sensitive position involving direct contact with Relatives In Recovery attending a residential treatment program, and therefore, we must encourage applicants be an abstainer from any mood-altering drugs, cannabis and alcohol for a minimum of two (2) years.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Degree in Social Work, diploma in counselling, or related field preferred.
  • Combination of relevant training and experience considered.
  • Strong emotional intelligence, empathy, self-awareness, and the ability to build trust with Relatives In Recovery.
  • Must possess a minimum Class 5 driving license and be willing to obtain a Class 4 license.
  • Clear Criminal Record and Vulnerable Persons Check and Adult Abuse Checks (within the last 6 months) is required.
  • Basic knowledge of MS Office programs or willingness to learn.
  • Strong ability to maintain confidentiality and abide by a Code of Conduct that ensures safety for all.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Treatment Director is a key lead at Nelson House Medicine Lodge, responsible for managing the eight-week Residential Treatment Program. This role combines clinical oversight and administrative leadership to ensure culturally safe, trauma-informed, and gender-informed care. The Treatment Director mentors treatment staff, upholds accreditation standards, and promotes a healing environment rooted in Indigenous values. Strong leadership, cultural awareness, and the ability to prevent vicarious trauma among Treatment staff are essential.

The Nelson House Medicine Lodge works with adults with high levels of mental health and substance use disorders who may have been exposed to significant serious or long-lasting trauma. Applicants should be aware of the inherent risks of working with this at-risk population we serve as well as other risks that may occur with new admissions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the delivery of the eight-week residential treatment program, ensuring alignment with best practices, accreditation standards, and the Lodge’s Vision, Mission, and Values.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to treatment staff, including orientation, performance evaluations, and ongoing professional development.
  • Facilitate effective communication and teamwork through regular meetings, correspondence, and collaborative planning.
  • Manage clinical operations, including case reviews, treatment plan approvals, and bi-weekly case conferences to support individualized care for Relatives in Recovery.
  • Monitor program outcomes, maintain accurate documentation, and ensure compliance with reporting requirements (e.g., AMIS system).
  • Collaborate with Intake & Aftercare Specialist to maintain bed utilization targets and manage admissions and waitlists.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with NCN leadership, community stakeholders, and partners.
  • Participate in recruitment, accreditation processes, strategic planning, and community needs assessments.
  • Promote a trauma-informed, gender-informed, and culturally safe environment that integrates traditional Indigenous practices into healing plans.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree or diploma in Social Sciences from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of management experience in a health or treatment setting.
    (A suitable combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.)
  • Strong leadership skills, consistent work ethic, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • An understanding of, and respect for, Indigenous culture as the foundation for recovery and the ability to speak an Indigenous language is an asset.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Persons Check (required prior to hire).
  • Must sign an Oath of Confidentiality before employment.

People selected for this position must be an abstainer of alcohol, marijuana & illegal drug use for at least of three (3) years. An understanding of the Indigenous culture & the ability to speak Cree language is an asset.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the Housekeeper/Janitor is a key member of the NHML Maintenance Team, providing a range of services that include heavy lifting, hauling, cleaning, transporting materials, furniture and equipment. The primary function of the Housekeeper/Janitor is to maintain an orderly, sanitary and safe living and working environment for Relatives In Recovery, staff and visitors of the NHML.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Waste collection from designated areas throughout the facility and dispose accordingly
  • Maintain clean, sanitary and safe condition of the area and equipment according to established standards
  • Daily vacuuming, dusting and garbage removal of staff offices and other designated areas of the facility
  • Clean staff and public washrooms, walls, ceiling, floors, rugs and upholstery throughout the facility and operate associated equipment as per established procedures
  • Restock supplies in assigned areas
  • Other duties as may be assigned from time to time

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Must possess a dependable, consistent and reliable work record including attendance at work
  • Minimum Grade 10 or equivalent; ability to read, write and speak English
  • Must have high degree of responsibility, integrity and confidentiality
  • Must be in good physical health
  • Must exhibit and practice cleanliness
  • Must demonstrate ability to work as a team player
  • Must demonstrate and exhibit a focus on the safety of Relatives In Recovery (clients)
  • A valid Manitoba drivers’ license and ability to speak Cree is an asset
  • Previous experience preferred

 

Reference to Supervisor:

  • Determine appropriate work routine to maintain a clean and orderly facility
  • Offer recommendations for improving efficiency within the Department
  • Prepare daily reports as needed and submit to Supervisor on a weekly basis
  • Dialogue with supervisor for problem solving

 

Guidelines for Role:

  • Treat all Relatives In Recovery, staff and public pertaining information with confidentiality
  • Work according to approved housekeeping policies and procedures
  • Work according to approved housekeeping and infection control standards and guidelines
  • The cleaning duties must be carried out so as not to interfere with treatment programming

 

Physical, Mental and Sensory Demands:

  • Work involves heavy lifting of up to 50-80 pounds or more, carrying supplies, equipment and materials
  • Use appropriate carts and mechanical aids to prevent workplace injury
  • Motor coordination is necessary to be able to operate equipment and to move equipment safely within the confines of the Relatives In Recovery’s rooms, hallways and ramps
  • Extensive standing and walking as well as stooping, kneeling, bending and crouching when performing daily job duties

 

Working Conditions:

Subject to injury from moving parts of cleaning equipment and from sharp objects such as needles, broken glass that may be in the garbage

May be in frequent contact with water and strong cleaning and disinfecting or degreasing solutions at which time protective equipment must be worn.
