POSITION SUMMARY:

The Nelson House Medicine Lodge Inc. is seeking applicants to fill four (4) board appointments, each running from three – five years. The NHML Board of Directors is a policy driven entity which has two significant functions: the development/oversight of policies and procedures for the agency and secondly, providing direction to the Executive Director.

Board Officer Positions

Following the election of Directors, the Board elects officers from among its members to serve in the following leadership roles:

• Chair – Provides leadership to the Board and serves as its primary representative.
• Vice-Chair – Supports the Chair and assumes leadership responsibilities when required.
• KTC/MKO Representative – Acts as a liaison with the Keewatin Tribal Council (KTC) and Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO), advocating for the interests and wellness needs of the communities served by Nelson House Medicine Lodge within the regional network.
• Sub-Committees – Audit & Finance, Governance, and Nominating Committee

All officer positions are elected by the Board from among its sitting Directors in accordance with the organization’s bylaws and governance policies.

Candidates for these position must be knowledgeable of the NHML’s processes, service delivery, confidentiality, conflict resolution, funding advocacy. Must role model a healthy and sober lifestyle and be willing and able to share their knowledge, skills and expertise to benefit the organization. These positions come with modest honoraria and will entail occasional travel.

The Nelson House Medicine Lodge Board is part of the NCN Governance Model.

Full-Time, 6-Month Term Position with possibility of permanent employment

Primary Role:

Coordinate and deliver all aspects of the traditional and cultural activities offered in the Nelson House Medicine Lodge programs.  They will work directly with Relatives In Recovery (clients) in the residential and outpatient treatment programs.  They will work collaboratively with staff and community partners so they may help their Relatives begin to understand how the cultural teachings and ceremonies serve as a foundation for their personal healing and recovery.

Duties And Responsibilities:

• Work as an integral part of the treatment team; assisting the Counsellors in the development of holistic assessments and healing plans that encompass traditional values, beliefs and practices
• Facilitate cultural workshops and ceremonies
• Harvest medicines needed for Relatives’ wellness and recovery, and for those who may be experiencing withdrawal symptoms
• Work on evenings and weekends on a rotation basis with other members of the treatment team.
• Liaison with community partners in health and wellness initiatives
• Other duties assigned from time to time.

Knowledge, Abilities And Skills:

This position requires an individual with extensive knowledge and experience of the traditional Indigenous way of life and spiritual practices.  This person must be fluent in an Indigenous language, preferably Cree; and ability to read and write in English and have respect for others’ teachings. They must be willing to expand and improve present knowledge and experience as it relates to traditional teachings and/or ceremonies that may benefit Relatives in their healing from the harms of addiction and mental health.   Must demonstrate ability to maintain confidentiality. Must possess a valid minimum Class 5 driver’s license with a willingness to obtain their Class 4 driver’s license within six (6) months of hire.

Education And Experience:

This position is unique in that it requires a person who is knowledgeable in the Indigenous and Western worldviews. They must demonstrate a good working knowledge of traditional healing practices, natural plant medicines, teachings and be able to conduct healing ceremonies that will aid our clientele in their recovery from trauma, addictions and withdrawal from substances.   Successful candidate must have a minimum of 3 years of experience working directly with Relatives and their families afflicted with mental health and/or substance use disorders.

People selected for this position must be an abstainer of alcohol, cannabis & illegal drugs for at least 5 years. An understanding of Indigenous culture & the ability to speak Cree is an asset.

Position: Treatment Counsellor
Location: Nelson House Medicine Lodge – Nelson House, Manitoba

Are you committed to helping stop the cycle of intergenerational trauma impacting First Nations people, families, and communities? If so, we are looking to hire a Treatment Counsellor to join our dynamic team, empowering individuals to strive for a good life rooted in a good heart.

Primary Role

As a vital member of our treatment team, your primary role will involve conducting comprehensive assessments and delivering treatment services within our eight (8) week inpatient treatment program.

The successful candidate will possess considerable knowledge of Best Practice Standards in substance use disorders and concurrent disorders, enhancing treatment outcomes. You will promote person-centered care and incorporate traditional and cultural practices into Relatives’ healing plans.

This role demands expertise in counselling techniques, group facilitation, assessments, treatment planning, and evaluation. Strong human relations skills are essential to guide, influence, and motivate others in achieving the Medicine Lodge’s goals. A deep understanding of Indigenous healing methods is crucial to promote culture as the foundation of healing and recovery.

Hours of Work

• Alternating shifts on a rotational basis every 2 weeks: days from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and alternate evening shifts from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
• Includes Saturday and Sunday shifts.
• Must have at least two full years of abstinence from all substances.

Education and Experience Required

• Degree or certificate in Social Work, counselling, or related field preferred.
• Combination of relevant training and experience considered.
• Strong emotional intelligence, empathy, self-awareness, and the ability to build trust with Relatives In Recovery.
• Must possess Class 5 driving license and be willing to obtain a Class 4 license within six months of hire.
• Clear Criminal Record, Vulnerable Persons Checks, Child and Adult Abuse Checks (within the last 6 months) required.
• Basic knowledge of MS Office programs or willingness to learn.
• Strong ability to maintain confidentiality.
